Net Nuetrality--> Humanity Lobotomy

I am not so much of the avid Internet user... I do not really use The Internet to create content unless mandated to do so. I use it to as a tool of convenience of communication or to pay bills. I am assuming by writing this blog, I am a creator of Internet content instead of just a consumer of internet content... And as a creator vicariously through this class, I believe that Net Neutrality is a huge issue that will effect many people who create content and use The Internet on a regular basis.

I've always had an issue with the commercialism of Newspapers, Radio and TV, it's probably why I don't really engage myself in those types of media. Newspapers, Radio and TV were created as sources of information and now it seems as if what they mostly are is platforms for selling corporate opinions and advertisements. Radio and TV are very limited to whoever is in charge on the opposite side and what they want to produce, and what they want us to consume... The Internet is not just an area for people to become content creators, but we have access to a vast plethora of information. If something we see on TV is not enough information we can look it up on the internet and have many perspectives of the same issues, having us be more informed individuals and coming to our own conclusions based on our individual research.

After watching the youtube video "Humanity Lobotomy" I have become aware of the threats against the freedom to create and the freedom to information. I did not know that telephone and cable companies wanted to allocate the internet and make it a "one directional medium." If 60% of content are made by the people, that is threatened to become content produced only by corporations. Net Neutrality is against corporate takeover of the internet and simply means that if one individual pays for the internet with a certain quality of service, and another individual pays for the internet with a similar quality of service then those two individuals can communicate through that service. Telephone and Cable companies impede on that freedom of communication. If all other forms of public creation, information and voice have been stifled, the internet is to be stifled as well, choking off independent content, and our freedom of speech. The internet will just be another platform for consumerism... That is a scary thought, that instead of producing we just sit and take in... Seems as is we will be more drone like than we already are.

I still wanted to learn more about Net Neutrality and the threats against it, therefore I am extending the information to my peers with the following links.

  1. Hi Humaira, Thanks so much for this post. I am much like you in the ways and purposes for which I access the Internet and other digital technologies. Prof Gleason and Prof Macbeth led (drove?) me kicking and screaming to create and use blogs and also to research on the Internet. (I have actually been known to bemoan the demise of card catalogs. No more I assure you!) So now here I am in Digital Literacies and wondering what the _ _ _ _ I am doing here. I am about to "read" "interact with" some of the on line assignments and I will start with Net Neutrality. Your post gives me some insight and additional information which hopefully will make my reading/viewing more productive. Thanks.
