CUNY and The Digital University

I received this email from CUNY and thought I'd share it with you (if you haven't seen it). It is a podcast discussing the digital media/technology and the classroom. Click here to listen to Podcast.
As universities across the globe become digitalized — using technology within the classroom to offer online degrees — commercial interests must be addressed, according to Siva Vaidhyanathan, associate professor of Media Studies and Law at the University of Virginia. "The wrong reason to teach online is because administrators think there will be a payoff," said Prof. Vaidhyanathan in a lecture, "The Classroom is Sacred: Digitization Without Commercialization," at the Graduate Center. "The right reason to teach online is to reach students who can't reach you." A frequent contributor to New York Times Magazine and The Chronicle of Higher Education, Prof. Vaidhyanathan discussed how the new technology can be applied more constructively to those who need it most. "Online teaching gives us the opportunity to engage with students from under-served communities all over the world."
